WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS

Vision Problems Are Common After A Concussion

Published research has found that the large majority of concussion patients with lingering symptoms have some form of underlying oculomotor problem, most commonly convergence insufficiency (difficulty coordinating both eyes on close-up objects) and accommodative insufficiency (difficulty focusing).

These things often compound on vestibular, cervical, and nervous system conditions that often follow minor traumatic brain injury, and can slow down healing if not properly addressed.

WHY IT MATTERS

Vision care for post-concussion patients has shown real, measurable results in published clinical studies. If your doctor has ruled out other causes and you're still dealing with headaches, dizziness, or trouble focusing weeks or months after your injury, your eyes may be the piece that's been missed. This is treatable, it just needs the right kind of assessment to find.

A TEAM THAT CARES ABOUT YOU

Dr. Teri Hines & Dr. Jennifer Leung

Dr. Hines opened View Optometry in 2017 after training at Simon Fraser University and completing her Doctor of Optometry with honours at Pacific University in Oregon. Dr. Leung joined after studying at UBC and earning her Doctor of Optometry with honours from the University of Waterloo with honours, bringing a special interest in post-concussion vision care. Together, they lead a clinic built on unrushed exams and honest recommendations.

DR. JENNIFER LEUNG

A special interest in Acquired Brain Injury Vision Care

As someone who was born amblyopic in both eyes and has experienced multiple concussions, Dr. Leung has developed a special interest in binocular vision and acquired brain injury vision care. She understands that your visual system is complex and completely unique to you, and deserves a personalized and detailed assessment that a routine exam isn't built for.

Whether your symptoms started with a recent concussion or have lingered from long COVID, the assessment process is similar, and so is the goal: a treatment plan specific to your needs and your vision, not a one-size fits all solution.

How soon after a concussion should I come in?

If visual symptoms haven't improved within a few weeks of your injury, it's worth getting assessed, research shows that waiting longer without treatment doesn't tend to resolve these symptoms on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after a concussion should I wait before getting assessed?

If visual symptoms haven't resolved within a few weeks, it's worth booking an assessment rather than waiting longer, early treatment tends to have better outcomes.

Is this covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan, bring your policy details and we'll help confirm what's covered before your appointment.

Can this help with long-COVID symptoms too?

Yes, the visual symptoms associated with long COVID often overlap with post-concussion symptoms, and the same assessment process applies.

What does treatment actually involve?

It depends on what we find, often a combination of in-office vision therapy exercises and, in some cases, prism or tinted lenses, tailored to your specific symptoms.
