HOW WE TRACK IT

The Topcon MYAH: Our Myopia Control Instrument

We use the Topcon MYAH, a new instrument in our office built specifically for myopia control. Its biggest value is measuring axial length: the length of your child's eye, front to back. This is the number that tells us whether the eye is growing too fast, often before it shows up as a major prescription change.

What We Measure

  • Axial length (front-to-back eye growth)

  • Current prescription

  • Rate of change over time

Risk Factors We Check

  • Family history of myopia

  • Trends in your child's vision over the years

Our Goal

  • Slow the lengthening of the eye

  • Reduce yearly prescription changes and prevent future risk of certain eye diseases such as retina detachments

WHY IT MATTERS

As your child's eye keeps growing longer, their prescription gets stronger, and a longer eye puts more stress on the retina. In children who become highly myopic, this can lead to risk of retinal holes or tears. Catching this early gives us the best chance of keeping their long-term eye health on track.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I worry about myopia?

Any noticeable change in your child's distance vision is worth checking, but myopia often first shows up between ages 6 and 12. Earlier detection means more effective treatment.

Can myopia control actually stop my child's prescription from getting worse?

It won't reverse existing myopia, but it can meaningfully slow how much worse it gets, which lowers the long-term risk of serious eye conditions.

Does my child need special equipment for myopia control?

It depends on their assessment, options range from specialty contact lenses like Ortho-K to closer monitoring alone, based on their specific risk factors.

How is axial length different from a regular prescription check?

A prescription tells us how well your child sees today. Axial length tells us how fast their eye is physically growing, often the earliest warning sign, before the prescription itself changes much.
