Get your kid excited to wear glasses!

You’ve been to the optometrist and you’ve gotten the results: Your child needs glasses. This can be a big adjustment for them as they get used to wearing their glasses, remembering to put them on when needed and some children won’t want to wear their glasses at all! Here are some ways to make sure your child looks forward to putting on their glasses whether it’s every morning or simply for school.

Talk to them

  • All kids will have questions regarding their new accessory and a good way to be able to answer their question is by showing them. Books are a great resource and there are plenty of stories that can teach them that wearing glasses is cool.

  • Point out that there are advantages to wearing glasses! Their cartoons will be clearer, the books will be easier to read and people will be easier to see.

  • As them if their glasses are comfortable to wear and make sure their glasses fit them properly! Well fitting glasses should tuck neatly behind their ears, settle gently on their noses and should not pinch or rub against the skin. If you’re not sure, ask us, we’ll be happy to help!

Let them pick out their frames

  • Both of comfort and for style reasons, help guide your child to picking out their own frame. A child is much more likely to wear a frame that they like over a pair that they have been forced to purchase.

Don’t rush them

  • Not every child will want to wear their glasses right away all the time and that’s okay. Start with an hour a day and build up to a full day.

  • Depending on your child’s prescription it may be acceptable for them not to wear their glasses while playing, please talk to your optometrist about when the glasses are necessary and when they are optional

  • Another option for children who don’t like to wear their glasses would be contact lenses. Daily contact lenses are a great option for children and young adults since there is little risk of infections since they will be using a fresh lens every day

Little by little, your child will come to realize that their glasses benefits them and they will start wearing their glasses on their own. Encouragement and patience are key to becoming confident with wearing glasses together with yearly eye exams to make sure that their prescription is up to date. We would love to be a part of your child’s eye care, come see us today! Why kids should wear sunglasses too?
